Show Notes

  1. Resolve to be as entertaining and helpful as possible. The more value you offer the more in demand you will be. If you shoot for being helpful you will be both helpful and will sell books. If you shoot for selling books you will be neither help nor sell. If you are boring you won’t be invited back. The show is not about you.
  2. Ask for information about the audience and goal and theme for the episode.
  3. Listen to a podcast episode from the show to get a feel for it.
  4. Send the host a short bio ahead of time to use to introduce you. Make sure your website it in the bio. This is the one part of the episode you control.
  5. Prepare & practice your elevator pitch for the end of the episode.
  6. Don’t expect the interviewer to have read your book.
  7. Invest in a good microphone. Your built-in mic will make you sound like an amateur and will reduce future interview opportunities. This could be the second best investment you make. I recommend the Audio Technica ATR2100-USB (Affiliate Link).
  8. Make sure you are using the most recent version of Skype
  9. Find Skype’s mute button and keep it handy.
  10. Make some test calls to make sure everything is working.
  11. Use headphones
  12. Find a quiet place for the interview with a reliable internet connection. Have a plan for pets and kids if you are at home.
  13. Turn off all noisemakers (phones etc). Phone vibrations can go right into the microphone.
  14. Prepare a free gift to offer (on your website) to use to build your list. Tell the host about the gift ahead of time.
  15. Keep some water handy. Halls trick.
  16. Brain Juice
